Technology, The Environment & Our World

Why bother? Why bother learning about the role of technology and its impact on our environment and our society (our world)?

What example(s) of technology do you see?

What is Technology? Technology is… the use of science in industry and engineering to invent useful things or to solve problems.

Two types of Environment Natural – the parts not made by man. Designed (man-made) – the parts of the environment made by people.

Ever Wonder… What kinds of technology do you use within one day from the time you wake up to the time you sleep? Jot it down on chart paper.

Essential Questions What is Technology? What kinds of technology are there? Give examples. Is technology good or bad (or both) for the environment and for people? Explain. What do you think technology will be like in the future? How can we be effective and ethical users of technology?

Enduring Understandings Technology is… the use of science in industry and engineering to invent useful things or to solve problems. Technology and the environment are connected. Technology plays a large role in the development of society’s future. The ethical use of technology will always raise debate.

Jigsaw Overview When you get to your assigned number group, you will read an article take notes on it, and become an ‘expert’ on the topic. You will then go back to your original group and report the information.

Jigsaw – numbered groups - Experts In your numbered groups, practice PAPA: Preview the headings, pictures, captions. Read and Annotate the article together. Highlight/underline important details that answer the question/main heading. Circle any words you don’t know. Paraphrase on the side Answer any questions on the page. Write a summary on the front pg. to share when you get back to your group: (2 sent.): “The article we read was about… For example,…” Complete the TDEC paragraph on the back for homework.

Report to Whole Group Each group will have 2 min. to summarize main idea & details in their articles to their main group. Everyone else should listen and take notes in their journal. When everyone is done sharing, work together in your main groups to answer the summary questions. Discuss whole group and submit summary questions.

What did you learn? On your Pre-Test sheet that you glued into your journal, list 5-7 facts that you learned since the Pre-Test.
