State Mandates Teachers Edition Katrina Starks and Sara Smith Professor Coleman 11/07/2014

INTASC Standard #6 Assessment The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. Name of artifact: 12.1 Contemporary Issues Date: 11/07/2014 Course: Educ 101 Brief Description: For this assignment, we had to investigate state standards play a role in teaching and in the classroom. This information informs us on how the state affects us in our future of teaching. This project allowed us to see just how much the state is involved in the classrooms and how teachers truly feel about that. Rationale: To show our understanding of Standard #6, Assessment, we gathered collaborative information together that shows state mandates try to make the quality of a teacher based on their test scores. So, the assessments help guide the teachers and students to the next step.

State Standards Focus on certain subject aspects English History/ Social Studies Science Math Standards have to be put in lessons Students have to meet certain requirements

The Quality of a Teacher Based on a Score Lack of motivation Schools are failing Measuring academic achievements is all that counts Teacher’s effectiveness is based on 1-4 score

Surprise! It’s Another Evaluation. Teachers are annually evaluated in class Hard to pass Weighs principal observations, student test scores, and other factors chosen by districts Consequences when teachers don’t make the grade

Tell Us How You Really Feel “You can be an amazing teacher consistently, and I think, based on the way particularly the RISE model is designed, there is great potential for negative impact to you, that you might not be rated as effective as you truly are”- ISTA VP Teresa Meredith “The common core goes further in exploring what students can and should understand about a topic or demonstrable skill. The Indiana state standards are a little bit more cut and dry.” Flora Gitsis- Crooked Creek Elementary

Pro vs. Con Pro Con Gives feedback to teachers Chance for pay increase Gives a goal List of what you have to do Loss of motivation Poverty schools=bad scores Good teachers lost Loss of creativity More of a punishment then reward

So What Do You Think? Will the State Mandates continue to be as prominent in teaching 5 years down the road from now or will they begin to back off? How do you feel about the state being involved in your classroom and ultimately being judged by test scores?
