What will you be able to do? Identify independent and dependent clauses. Identify coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Write the 4 types of sentences: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex.

Quick Review What are the two basic parts of a sentence? What does simple mean? What does compound mean?

clauses

Clauses A clause is a collection of words that have a subject connected to the verb. she sang the song I ran a marathon

Two types of Clauses In sentences, there are two types of clauses: independent and dependent Independent Clause: contains a subject and verb, and expresses a complete thought Santa Claus delivers toys. Dependent Clause: contains a subject and verb, but it contains a subordinator, and it doesn’t express a complete thought because he is a jolly old soul. In other words, the dependent clause depends on the independent clause

Practice Time!

Because she couldn’t sing well. The concert was sold out last night. Identify the type of clause in each example (Write independent or dependent) Because she couldn’t sing well. The concert was sold out last night. When I went to the store. My mom gave me a dollar after I did my chores.

Conjunctions

Conjunctions! Con- means to connect. Conjunctions connect words, phrases, and clauses together. Two types of conjunctions: Coordinating Subordinating

FANBOYS: Coordinating conjunctions Coordinate means to go together. Coordinating conjunctions make two parts of a sentence go together. For And Nor But Or Yet So I went to the store, and I bought some eggs. I will eat the eggs and bacon. I went to the store, so I would not starve. *Never ever start a sentence with a coordinating conjunction!

Awubis: Subordinating conjunctions Subordinate means lower in position. Subordinating conjunctions make one part of the sentence dependent on the other part. Although/after When/while Unless/until Because If Since I went to my friend’s house after I finished my homework. My mom said I can go to the movies if I wash the dishes.

Now Let’s Learn the four types of sentences!

Simple Sentences A simple sentence is another way to say 1 Independent Clause. The concert was sold out last night is an example of a simple sentence. We use simple sentences to build all of the other sentence structures. Practice: Write a simple sentence.

Compound Sentences Compound sentences are 2 independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction; in other words, they are 2 simple sentences connected with a FANBOYS. We went to Disneyland together, and I rode Space Mountain 20 times. Practice: Write a compound sentence.

Complex sentences A complex sentence has an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. In other words, it is 2 simple sentences combined with an AWUBIS. My mom gave me a dollar after I did my chores is an example of a complex sentence. Which part is the independent clause? Which part is the dependent clause? Practice: Write a complex sentence.

Compound-Complex Sentences This sentence type takes the compound sentence and the complex sentence and smooshes them together. It has 3 or more simple sentences, 2 combined with a FANBOYS, and then one or more added on with an AWUBIS. We went to Disneyland together, but I rode Space Mountain 20 times while they rode Pirates of the Caribbean is an example of a compound-complex sentence. Practice: Write a compound-complex sentence.
