N5 Exam Prelim November/December 2014 You will sit 3 Papers: Reading and Writing Listening Reading 30 marks Writing 20 marks Listening 20 marks

Reading & Writing Paper: 1hr 30 mins Reading: 30 marks, Writing 20 marks Spend about 1 hr on this section You will read 3 texts in French Then you will answer approx 6 questions on each text in English You are allowed to use a dictionary Some questions are simply comprehension in English Some are multiple choice Some are fill in the blanks (it may be more than one word to fill in)

Writing Paper (Approx 30mins of 1h 30 paper) You will write a letter to apply for a job The letter must be between 120 and 150 words Content must be relevant to the job advertised 6 bullet points must be addressed 4 are predictable and can be learned before the exam ( you may need to change some detail depending on the job) 2 are unpredictable and you have prepare as best you can for them Structure your work, write in separate paragraphs Use a variety of vocabulary and tenses

Exam Technique/Tips For reading/writing paper... Do the writing first, but remember to watch timings, give yourself 30 mins! You could do the first 4 bullet point, then do the reading, then go back to the writing. For the reading, make sure you read the blurb in English at the top, then read the questions in English, check the marks available and then read the French. Break the French into chunks, remember the questions are in the same order as the text, read a paragraph at a time.

Listening Paper: 20 marks 25 minutes for the paper 2 parts: Monologue: 8 marks including a general purpose question (multiple choice) Dialogue: 12 marks You have 1 minute to study the questions You will hear each section 3 times There is an interval of 1 minute between playings Answers in English, some simple answer, some complete sentence blanks

Listening Exam Technique Make sure you study the questions beforehand. You have 1 minute to do this Try and predict what sort of vocabulary/ answers there could be Use the question to help you listen out for the answer, ie. Which hobbies...? Les passe-/ temps, les loisirs, temps libre- sports and activity vocabulary. When...? Time vocabulary/dates/months, etc.
