A Cell Model C-48 7th Grade Science

Warm-Up What is the function of the lysosomes? What is the function of the vacuole? What is a simile for cell wall? What do the chromosomes contain? What is the cytoplasm? What is a simile for a cell membrane?

In your Journal New Entry: “A Cell Model” Challenge: What is the function of a cell membrane?

Copy table into your journal: Cup Initial color outside Initial color inside Final color outside Final color inside 11 1 22

Read the introduction and look for key ideas

Safety Wear safety goggles while working with chemicals. Do not touch the chemicals or bring them into contact with your nose or mouth. Be careful not to get Lugol’s solution on your skin or clothing as it may stain. Wash your hands after completing the activity.

Complete the procedure and record your data Be sure not to contaminate either bag.

What is Happening???? In a full sentences in your journal write: What is happening to the baking extracts that are inside of the balloons? Is this Active or passive Transport and why?

Conclusion: Wrap-up 1.) What color did the cornstarch turn when the iodine diffused into it? 2.) Which particles- (cornstarch or iodine)- were able to cross the cell membrane? 3.) Which particles- (cornstarch or iodine)- were NOT able to cross the cell membrane? 4.) What is the function of the cell membrane? 5.) Why is it important for particles to pass through the cell membrane?

Analysis question 4 Based on your cell model, what is the function of the cell membrane?

Analysis question 5 Think about the fact that cells are alive. Why is it important for particles to be able to pass through the cell membrane?

What is the function of a cell membrane? Vegetable cells have a cell membrane and a cell wall.
