Edwin D. Smith Elementary Location: Oakwood, OH Grades: 1-6 Students: ≈ 530 Staff: 1 certified, full time Schedule: fixed The librarian at Smith works with each class 20 minutes a week. She is helped by between 30 and 35 parent volunteers and a volunteer coordinator. There are open blocks so teachers can bring classes for extra library time. Circulation The circulation area is attractive and easy to access.

Office Space The librarian’s office space is part of the library.

Technology / Instructional Space The library computers are primarily used for searching the catalog and taking AR quizzes. The library computers are primarily used for searching the catalog and taking AR quizzes. The library easily accommodates a class or two.

Story Time / Loft / Enchanted Oak There is a very inviting gathering space for group or individual reading. There is a very inviting gathering space for group or individual reading. The reading loft, enchanted oak, and mural were all done by parent volunteers. The students at Smith each stamped a leaf on the mural when it was created.

Shelving – Guided Reading Sets / Professional Materials The library houses guided reading sets for teachers to use in classrooms. The librarian is not responsible for their circulation. Collector’s Corner / Theme of the Week Each week a different student is chosen to display a personal collection in the circulation desk. View from Loft The library used to be an auditorium. This library is warm and inviting. The librarian does not do a lot of teaching, but coordinates many programs/special details to encourage students to enter and enjoy the library.

Conclusions This is a beautiful library space. The attractive and inviting features make this library a place students would look forward to visiting. The librarian does not do much instruction in this library, but it would be easy to do in the current set up. The emphasis in this library is on enjoying reading.
