AP Lit and Comp Mr. Reiter

Why AP? Confidence: Develop better study habits, improve writing skills, and sharpen problem-solving abilities. This will give students the confidence to tackle the academic challenges they can expect in college. Credit: Entering college with AP credits gives students time to move into upper-level courses in their field of interest, to pursue a double major, or study/travel abroad. College Success: Research consistently shows that students who are successful in AP typically experience greater academic success in college than similar students who do not participate in AP.

Purpose of the Class Provide skills needed for a college level literature course: Close, analytical reading of dense texts Analytical (both formal and informal) writing over text How to use text evidence to support one’s point Enhance technical writing ability (grammar, syntax, etc) Comprehend abstract texts (poetry, prose passages, novels) Time management Accountability Ability to discuss literary points in texts

The AP Test 3 hours in length 60 minutes – 55 multiple choice questions 120 minutes – three essays (one poem, one passage, one open response that deals with a major work) If a student gets a 3 or higher (1-5 scale), he or she will receive college credit http://apcentral.collegeboard.org

My Goals Through practice timed writings, practice multiple choice tests, presentations, formal papers, and class discussions, I want my AP students to be able to not only successfully approach the test, but I also want them to be able to make the transition to college easily.
