CONFLICT WITHIN RELIGIONS Schism between Christians: Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy Divisions in Islam to Sunnis and Shiites Buddhism split into 2 sects: Mahayana and Theravada.

Schism between Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism Roman Empire divided between Pope in Rome and Patriarch in Byzantium Pope and Patriarch Struggled for Power Pope excommunicates Patriarch Patriarch excommunicates Roman Catholics Division is made between Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics.

Division in Islam into Sunni and Shi’a 7th Century CE – Conflicts between Islamic groups causes great splits in beliefs. Sunni and Shi’a (Shiite) form Sunni – believed first 4 Caliphs were legitimate. Shi’a - believe Muhammad’s son-in-law (or nephew) should have succeeded him directly.
