Data!

Types of charts/graphs Frequency tables Dot plots Pictographs Bar graphs ALL graphs have common characteristics- Labels scales

Data- a collection of facts, gathered by observing, or measuring,; usually displayed on a chart or table

Scale- a number line with marks at fixed intervals used in graphs

Symbol- a mark used to represent an idea

Key-the part of the diagram that shows what symbols mean

Frequency table A table listing each value in a data set followed by the number of times it appears. We use tally marks to display data.

Dot plot Dot plots have a dot or X for each point of data and can be used to represent frequency A graph that shows data on a number line using dots or X

Pictograph A graph that uses pictures or symbols to represent collected data.

Bar graph A graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to represent data

Create a graph-

The graph below shows the number of sunny days and rainy days in a city during four months. Based on the graph, how many more sunny days than rainy days did this city have during the months of April, May, and June? A) 21 B) 56 C) 26 D) 20

For which driver is the information in the graph different from the information in the chart?  Mark your answer.   A)   Sarah B)   Alex C)   Destiny D)   Richard

Create graph

Andrea is recording the temperature in her town each day for 2 weeks as a science project. Which would be the best way for Andrea to present her findings to the class? Mark your answer. A)   Interview a weather person B)   Make a line graph showing the temperatures C)   Draw a picture of her town D)   Make a pie graph showing the temperatures

Based on the graph, which statement is true? A)   There were 12 more 4th-grade students than 5th-grade students who participated in Earth Day activities. B)   A total of 84 of these students sorted recycling. C)   There were 24 more 4th-grade and 5th-grade students who planted trees than who made banners. D)   A total of 36 students participated in Earth Day activities.

Mrs. Nick put a box with a check mark in it on a chart every 2 weeks for her students that turned in all their homework. Look at the chart. Which student has turned in all their homework for 6 weeks? A) Bob B) Jill C) Hal D) Sue
