Ethics in Psychological Research. participants’ rights privacy and confidentiality voluntary participation withdrawal rights informed consent procedures deception in research

Participants Rights. Privacy and confidentiality Protection from intrusion in the collection, storage and sharing of personal information. Anonymity assists this, by not disclosing names Cconfidentiality is a right to privacy in terms of access, storage and disposal of information related to the research Results can’t be disclosed unless written consent has been obtained (if under 18 parent/guardian provides this consent) Confidential – locked cupboard/filing cabinet, shedding, no names in results.

Participants Rights. 3. Voluntary Participation Must decide to participate on their own free will There can be no coercion or bribery to participate or negative consequences if they don’t

Participants Rights. 4. Withdrawal rights Must be disclosed during the process of obtaining informed consent Entitled to withdraw at any time without consequence or pressure

Informed Consent Procedures Fully inform of the nature of the research and obtain written consent to participate Parents or guardians must give it if child is under 18 All possible risks and stress must be outlined Participants must not be psychologically vulnerable Where it is inappropriate to gain consent from participants they must get it from an ethics committee

Deception Withholding information from the participant about a study’s true purpose, before the experiment begins. Used when giving participants information about the experiment beforehand might influence their behaviour/accuracy of results. After the experiment is complete, experimenters must debrief the participants and explain the true purpose for the study to ensure the participants do not suffer any psychological or physical stress.

Deception – Milgram Experiment
