What is Social and Emotional Competence Emotional Competence- “How well, overall a person copes with his or her feelings, and whether the person has empathy for and gets along with others.” (Marion,M.(2015) pg.209.) Social Competence- children who, “tune in to their surroundings, relate well to other children, and have effective social skills.” (Marion, M. (2015) pg. 220

Importance of Friendship Helps children learn more about themselves, and helps them develop their own identity. Children develop social skills and emotional skills, and increase a sense of belonging. As children mature friends help reduce stress and navigate challenging developmental experiences. Friends can positively influence children’s health. (Children who play more with friends, stay active, and are more likely to enjoy exercising.)

Reasons Why Some Children have Trouble Making/ Keeping Friends Learning and attention issues can be a reason why some children have a hard time making friends. Learning and attention issues can effect communication or listening skills. (making conversations difficult.) ADHD- child lacks self-control, they talk without thinking, may not pay attention to others. Executive functioning issues- trouble sharing, taking turns, controlling emotions, and accepting other’s view points. Nonverbal-miss social cues, may not understand humor, or sarcasm, take things too literally.

Strategies that Help Children Make/ Keep Friends Model the importance of staying connected with your own friends- Talk to your children about your friends or invite your friends over. Model Good Friendship Skills- identify a friendship skill your child lacks and help them develop it, by showing that skill in a constructive way. Encourage the Friendships that are Important to Your Child- Schedule time for the child to see their friends, outside of school. Respect your Child’s Personality- Do not compare a child to another child. Some children prefer having lots of friends, others may not need many friends to feel happy.

Importance of Self Expression Builds Confidence- working hard towards something and seeing the positive results of that hard work, will build a child’s confidence. Reminder that everyone is different-When a child has the chance to explore their own likes they become aware that they enjoy different things and so do others. Creates Unique Personal Goals- When a child is able to express and explore the things that they are good at they will begin to set more goals for themselves and discover new talents. Reinforces Well-Rounded Development- Children need the opportunity to explore and develop in all areas, finding a unique form of self-expression will allow them to do so.

Conclusion It is important for children to be both socially and emotionally competent. Social and emotional competence help children build and keep friendships. Parents should help their children build and keep friendships. It is important to understand why some children may have trouble making friends, and different ways of helping them. Parents should encourage Self-Expression.
