Do You Feel Safe in Your Home? Intimate Violence and Abuse

The people you love… are the ones that are most likely to hurt or assault you.

This is Normal in the U.S. ….1 out of every 4 women will likely experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Types of Intimate Violence Common Couple Violence – Violence that occurs during an argument when one partner strikes the other. Intimate terrorism – One partner tries to dominate and control the other. Violent Resistance – “Self-Defense” violence. Mutual Violent Control – Both partners are violently trying to control the relationship.

Every 35 seconds a child suffers from abuse or neglect. & In 2007… More than 1,700 children died from it.

As much as.. Three-quarters of all physical assaults, four-fifths of all rapes, and half of all stalking incidents suffered by females from their intimate partners are never reported.

Between 2001 and 2005.. 30% of female murder victims and 5% of males were killed by an intimate partner.

Although there is violence caused by females.. .. Males tend to be more extreme and have different causes for violence; power and control.

Singer Rihanna becomes part of the statistics..

Females between the age of 20-24 are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.

Woman of all races, ages, and socioeconomic statuses experience intimate violence.

One of the most serious forms of intimate violence is rape. This means.. Unwanted sex perpetrated by force, threat of harm, or when the person is intoxicated.

Children’s need for a father. Why Some Women Stay. Economic dependence. Religious pressure. Children’s need for a father. Fear of being alone. Guilt, pity, shame. Love. Nowhere else to go. Helplessness. Countless reasons..

Report being victims of physical dating violence. One in 11 teens.. Report being victims of physical dating violence. & One in four adolescents.. Report experiencing emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual violence each year.

The Costs of Intimate Violence: Financially, it costs $8 billion a year for mental and health services for victims, the millions of dollars in broken/stolen property, and the unemployment of victims due to time out of work. There are nonfinancial costs as well. Such as the effects on the victim’s physical and mental health.

Why are Families Violent? Is it because of..

a mental illness. alcohol or drug abuse. stress. cultural norm .. a mental illness .. .. alcohol or drug abuse .. .. stress .. ? .. cultural norm.. Even because it is love? .. power ..

Hidden Victims of Family Violence: Siblings, Parents, and the Elderly.

Sibling Violence …40% to 80% of children under 18 experience sibling violence or abuse. That includes pushing, slapping, throwing, hitting, or something more severe.

Parents as Victims While conducting studies on children abusing their parents, 20% of mothers and 14% of fathers report having been hit in the 12 months before being surveyed.

Elder Abuse ..It’s estimates that more than 2 million older people over 50 are physically abuse annually. 90% of elder abuse victims are abused by a family member.

The Economic Costs of Family Violence ..The annual cost for domestic violence victimization is $728 million. Victims of domestic violence lose almost 8 million days of paid work which equals the amount of 32,000 full-time jobs.

Intervention Protect victims. Rehabilitating offenders. Assisting and strengthening families.

Eliminating social stress Strengthening families. Prevention Eliminating social stress Strengthening families.

…Reduce poverty, inequality, unemployment, and inadequate health care.

…Promote sex education and family planning.

...End social isolation and have support systems.

...Break the family cycle of violence and promote education about disciplinary alternatives.

...Address the cultural norms that legitimize and glorify violence.
