Unit 1: Expressions of Canadian Identity Chapter 1: An Introduction to Canadian Identity

What Does Canada Mean to You? Canadian Identity means different things to different people Where you live, your family and friends, activities you do, and your values Everyone take 5 minutes and complete a “who am I” concept web in there exercise books!!!

Artists Reflect Canadian Identity Canadian Identity is portrayed through many ways including: Art Music Literature

Canadian Identity: Art First Nations use many forms of art forms (or media) to represent their way of life For example the Inuit use the inuksuk, as a symbol in the Arctic, used as a message to mark good hunting

Canadian identity: Art Ojibwa rock carvings (known as petroglyphs) are rock carvings known to the Anishinabe people in Ontario Carved between 600 and 1200 years ago, they tell of spiritual beliefs.

Canadian Identity: Music Many songs written in Canada have discussed and described the features of our country Loyalty to community is often a major factor “Farewell to Nova Scotia” is a folk song that tells of a sailor torn from Nova Scotia by war.

Canadian Identity: Music Musical Stereotypes also occur Stereotypes is about believing an entire group of people have certain interests or characteristics because of their age, race or economic status There is a revival of Celtic music in the Maritimes but do all Canadians want to listen to Celtic music?........A fair answer would be NO

Canadian Identity: Literature Often authors of literature express their Canadian Identity though story’s, poems, novel exerts, and ballads. This is often done by recounting stories about when you were young.

Canadian Identity: Literature An example would be David Booth’s “The Dust Bowl” A story about 3 generations waiting out the most recent drought on their prairie farm. The Grandfather tries to recount old memories as a source of inspiration to hold onto the farm
