MT Lesson #4

MS = Multiple sclerosis Chronic destruction of the CNS, destruction of the myelin that surrounds the neuron.

LP = Lumbar Puncture Puncture into the arachnoid membrane around the spinal cord; spinal tap

ALS = Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the brain stem. Lou Gehrig’s disease

DNR = Do Not Resuscitate

TENS = Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation Is the use of electrical current produced by a device to stimulate neurons.

SAD = Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD = Seasonal Affective Disorder. Recurrent winter depression characterized by overeating, oversleeping and irritability. Relieved by the arrival of Spring or light therapy.

EST = Electroshock Therapy A treatment for serious mental illness. The application to the head of an electrical current to induce a seizure.

BAL = Blood Alcohol Level Amount of alcohol found in a persons bloodstream.

TIA = Transient Ischemic Attack Ministroke. A temporary blockage of blood to the brain, causes dizziness, numbness, impaired vision, unconsciousness

MVA = Motor Vehicle Accident

OCD = Obsessive Compulsive Disorder A person with OCD cannot control their fearful or worrisome thoughts. May control this by repetitive behavior.

ADHD = Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder A common behavioral disorder that affects 8 to 10% of the population, mostly boys; They act without thinking, cannot sit still.

MRI = magnetic resonance imaging A MR scanner to obtain Detailed sectional images Of the body.

A machine that makes a xray of a section of the body. CT = Computerized Tomography

PET = Positron Emission Tomography Using a Pet Scan. PET Scanner.

AD = Right ear

AS = Left ear

AU = Both ears

OM = Otitis Media

ENT = ear, nose, throat
