Missouri Compromise Compromise of 1820

What changes did it bring? Divides North and South Missouri and Maine are added

How did it solve problem? To keep balance states were suppose to be admitted in pairs (free and slave)

What territory added to slave? Missouri Arkansas & Florida territory

What territory added to free? Maine Unorganized and Michigan

What did South gain/lose Gain = Promise slavery would continue to exist south of the 36 30 line Lose = access to farm land in the Great Plains (but thought that was bad farming land)

Why would South look to land in MX? Need land to expand into, think Great Plains has poor farm land and MO compromise prohibits slavery in the North

Why JQA fear compromise? Think just a temporary solution to much bigger problem
