HOW HAS ROCKETS CHANGED OVER HISTORY? by JAMES BROOKS

A Little History: The Evolution of the rocket has made it an important tool in the exploration of space For years rockets have included ceremonial and warfare uses. Chinese rocket or fire arrow. Not until the 20th century, did the principle of rockets evolve into what we have today with space travel & space science.

NASA - History President Eisenhower established NASA back in 1958 NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Reason for starting program was in response to the Soviet Union launch their first satellite in 1957. President Kennedy focused on NASA and was able to successfully launch Armstrong & Aldrin to the moon on July 20 1969.

NASA – Today NASA today has three principal organizations: Aeronautic Pioneers new flight technologies Improves exploration Human Exploration & Operations Focuses on International Space Station Human exploration beyond Earths orbit Science Explores Earth, Solar System & the Universe

Timeline: 1946 to 1955 (some events) 1949 On February 24th, a number 5 two-stage rocket launches setting a record of altitude of 244 miles and velocity 5510 mph. 1950 July 24th, the first rocket was launch from Cape Kennedy. It was a number8 of the two-stage rockets. 1955 On July 29th, President Eisenhower approved the launching of an unmanned satellite to circle Earth.

Timeline: 1957 to 1966 1958 NASA launches a successful satellite into space. It was the USAF 31 lb Explorer. 1960 A weather satellite Tiros 1 was successfully launched First Communication Satellite 124-lb Echo 1, was launched Two Dogs (Strelka & Belka) on Sputnik 5, were the first animals to return to Earth successfully. 1966 USSR - First soft landing on the Moon with Luna 9

Timeline: 1967 to 1980 1968 First manned Apollo Fight: Apollo 7 (Schirra, Cunningham, Eisele) First Flight around the moon: Apollo 8 (Borman, Lovell, Anders) 1973 December: NASA launched Pioneer 10 for the first Jupiter flight. 1974 German Hellos 1 was launch by NASA to go around the Sun.

Timeline: 1981 to Present 1985 USA had its first probe reach a comet 1986 USA had its first probe reach Uranus 1987 USSR – had its first permanently-occupied space station, Space Station MIR. 1989 USA – had its first to reach Neptune

Conclusion As you can see the Rocket has changed through our history and has been a major part of Space travel.
