Pre-Writing Phase Use a Graphic Organizer Venn Diagram Mind Map Story Map Plot Diagram Charts Notes / Note Cards

Rough Draft Layout - Introduction Hook – An engaging first sentence that attracts the reader. It could be a question, interesting fact, a quote, etc. Bridge – Ideas or concepts that connects the interesting hook to the thesis. What is the book about? What characters are you talking about? Who is the author? What is your paper focusing on? Claim / Thesis – Your argument or answer to the question that your paper will be focused around.

Rough Draft Layout – Body Paragraph Topic Sentence – Relate back to your thesis statement, then state what this paragraph will be about WITHOUT using “this paragraph will be about” Evidence – Textual Evidence Analysis – Your thoughts and reasoning Transition Sentence – Transitions into next paragraph.

Rough Draft Layout – Conclusion Restate Thesis – Do NOT rewrite your thesis! Summarize or reword your original thesis to bring your argument to a close. Main Points – State the main points that you have discussed. What do you want your reader to walk away with? Do NOT rewrite sentences from your body paragraphs. Call to Action / Summarizing Point – This is where you leave your reader. What do you want them to do, think about or feel?
