Presentation transcript:

The Peripheral Nervous System - Nerve – bundle of neuron fibers

Classification of Nerves Mixed nerves – both sensory and motor fibers Afferent (sensory) nerves – carry impulses toward the CNS Efferent (motor) nerves – carry impulses away from the CNS Slide 7.57 Copyright © 2003 Pearson Education, Inc. publishing as Benjamin Cummings

-The Cranial Nerves -12 pairs that extend from brain and mostly serve head and neck (except vagus), numbered in order they are found Remember: Oh, Oh, Oh, to touch and feel very good velvet, ah

I. Olfactory – smell, sensory II. Optic – sight, sensory Oculomotor – eyes, motor Trochlear – eyes, motor V. Trigeminal – sensory for skin of face, motor for chewing Abducens – eyes, motor Facial – motor for facial expression and salivary and lacrimal glands, sensory for taste Vestibulocochlear – sensory, balance and hearing Glossopharyngeal – motor for swallowing, sensory for taste Vagus – sensory from throat and torso, motor for digestion and heart Accessory – motor to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius Hypoglossal- motor and sensory to tongue
