Marcellin Biology Notes Unit 6 Genetics

Gregor Mendel “Father of Genetics” Studied genetics using pea plants Genetics- the passing on of traits from parents to children

Mendel’s Experiment: Traits in Question

The Study of Genetics Dominant Trait- the “overpowering” trait Represented by an uppercase letter (ex. A, B, D, etc.) Recessive Trait- the weak trait Represented by a lowercase letter (ex. a, b, d, etc.)

Modeling Mendel Every individual must get 2 traits. 1 from Mom 1 from Dad

Modeling Mendel Eye color B (brown eyes)= dominant trait b (blue eyes) = recessive trait BB = Pure dominant = brown eyes bb = Pure recessive = blue eyes Bb = Hybrid = brown eyes- B dominates over b, so the overpowering trait appears in the child.

Mendel’s Experiment Spherical seed shape Yellow seed color Dominant traits Recessive traits Spherical seed shape Yellow seed color Purple flower color Dented seed shape Green seed color White flower color
