Marcellin Biology Notes Unit 6 Genetics
Gregor Mendel “Father of Genetics” Studied genetics using pea plants Genetics- the passing on of traits from parents to children
Mendel’s Experiment: Traits in Question
The Study of Genetics Dominant Trait- the “overpowering” trait Represented by an uppercase letter (ex. A, B, D, etc.) Recessive Trait- the weak trait Represented by a lowercase letter (ex. a, b, d, etc.)
Modeling Mendel Every individual must get 2 traits. 1 from Mom 1 from Dad
Modeling Mendel Eye color B (brown eyes)= dominant trait b (blue eyes) = recessive trait BB = Pure dominant = brown eyes bb = Pure recessive = blue eyes Bb = Hybrid = brown eyes- B dominates over b, so the overpowering trait appears in the child.
