Unit 9 - I have had my cellphone for six months Practical English 2

How long have you been a student at Daegu University?

Some of you have been at DU for a long time. Some of you have just started at DU.

GOAL #1 Use present perfect with SINCE, FOR, JUST, YET & ALREADY Remember we learned the present perfect in Unit 6 to talk about experiences…

Review of Present Perfect to have + past participle I have been to Paris. X I have been to Paris last year. I went to Paris last year. Use the present perfect for a period of time up to right now.

FOR and SINCE since tells when we started March NOW Present perfect + for or since  the length of an experience. I have been a university student since March. I have been a university student for 9 months. since tells when we started for tells the length (amount) of time

JUST Something has happened very recently - it’s NEW! How long have you lived in Daegu? last week moved to Daegu now I have just moved to Daegu. NOTE: JUST goes in between ‘to have’ and the past participle.

ALREADY Something before now, but FASTER than expected… How long have you lived in Daegu? last week moved to Daegu now I have just moved to Daegu. I have already met many new people. NOTE: ALREADY goes in between ‘to have’ and the past participle.

YET X Something expected, but ONLY in questions and negatives… How long have you been a student at DU? now March Have you started the new semester yet? No, I haven’t. I haven’t started yet. X NOTE: I have started DU yet.
