ASSIGNMENT:READ PAGES 220-223 TAKE NOTES ON KEY POINTS MAIN QUESTIONS: What was unique about the time period in literature? Who were the main authors and main titles of this time period?

IMAGINATION Imagination over Reason Journey from city into countryside to escape city life (caused by Industrial Revolution) The importance of nature and exotic locales. God and supernatural forces in nature Fiction, fantasy and poetry—poetry highest expression of the imagination

Intuition Your thoughts and feelings are important! Knowledge is gained through intuition rather than deduction. Quote by Wordsworth, “All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.”

Idealism Striving for a perfect world; an Utopian Society An impulse for reform Abolitionists Woman’s Rights

INSPIRATION The Romantic writer or artist was an “inspired creator” rather than a “technical master”. It means going with the moment, being spontaneous rather than precise. Writers were inspired by folktales that had been created by and for the common man. Inspired by the past especially medieval times. (courtly love=romance)

INDIVIDUALITY Celebrated the individual and the achievements of the misunderstood, heroic individual outcast Championed individual freedom and self- worth Developed the unique voice of Americanism Washington Irving—the father of American Literature
