Questions to think about… How are animals classified? Why are animals important? What are the different kinds of animals around us?

What are the different kinds of animals around us? Animals come in different shapes, sizes and colours.

How are animals classified? Animals can be classified into groups. Amphibians Birds Fish Insects Mammals Reptiles All the animals in the same group have similar characteristics.

What characteristics do amphibians have in common? Amphibians can live on land and in water. They breathe through their moist skin when underwater. They breathe through their lungs when on land. Most reproduce by laying eggs and their young usually live in water. Frogs and salamanders are amphibians!

What characteristics do birds have in common? Birds are the only animals with feathers. Feathers help birds to fly and keep them warm. Birds have a beak, a pair of wings and a pair of legs each. They reproduce by laying eggs.

What characteristics do fish have in common? Fish live in water. Their bodies are covered with scales. They breathe through gills. They have fins to help them swim. Most fish reproduce by laying eggs. Tilapias, goldfish and sharks are fish!

What characteristics do insects have in common? Insects have three pairs of legs and a pair of feelers. Their bodies are divided into three parts. Their bodies have a hard outer covering that protects their bodies and gives it shape. Insects reproduce by laying eggs. feelers legs body Beetles, grasshoppers and ants are insects.

What characteristics do mammals have in common? Mammals have hair on their bodies. Most give birth to their young. They produce milk to feed their young. Some mammals live on land while others live in the sea.

What characteristics do reptiles have in common? Reptiles have dry skin covered with scales. Some reptiles have shells. Reptiles reproduce by laying eggs. Crocodiles, snakes and turtles are reptiles!

Why are animals important? Animals depend on one another to live. Removing one group from its living area would affect other animals living in the same area. It is important to maintain the diversity of animals in the world. How do animals interact with one another?
