Section 1 – What is Energy?

Objectives I can… distinguish the relationship between energy, work and power. Identify the two basic types of energy

Energy, Work, and Power When wind moves a simple leaf or is strong enough to move a house, it is causing a change. Recall work is done when a force moves an object some distance. More specifically…some part of the force you exert must be in the same direction as the objects motion. The ability to do work or cause change is called energy. So, the wind has energy.

Work and Energy When anything does work on another object, some of its energy is transferred to the object. Thus…work is the transfer of energy. The object upon which the work is done gains a portion of the initial energy. Recall…energy is measured in joules which is the same unit as work.

Power and Energy Power is the rate at which work is done. If the transfer of energy is work, then power is the rate at which energy is transferred, or the amount of energy in a unit of time. Power is equal to Energy Transferred divided by time. Write out the formula.

Power and Energy Cont. Power is involved whenever energy is being transferred. For example…a calm breeze has power when it transfers energy to lift a leaf a certain distance. A tornado transfers the same amount of energy when it lifts the leaf the same distance. However, the tornado has more power than the calm breeze because it transfers energy to the leaf in less time.
