Work and Energy Notes on Chapter 5

Energy Intro Energy Work Defn: The ability to cause change Defn: The transfer of energy through motion Equation: Work = Force x Distance W = Fd Units = Joules

Kinetic Energy Defn: Energy in Motion Equation: KE = ½mv2 Units = Joules

Gravitational Potential Energy Defn: Energy due to height and weight of an object Equation: PE = mgh where g is 9.8m/s2 on Earth Units = Joules

Mechanical Energy Both Kinetic and Potential Energy Equation: ME = KE + PE Units = Joules Law of Conservation of Energy Defn: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it is only transferred. Hint: think of a swing

Some other types of Energy Potential Energy - stored energy Chemical Potential Energy - stored in bonds Thermal Energy - energy due to heat Electrical Energy - energy due to moving charges AND MANY MORE!!
