Modeling the Light Reaction Day 3 Unit 3 Modeling the Light Reaction

Warm Up: Sit in groups of 3, with people who you have not worked with in a long while Which of the following statements is (are) correct about oxidation-reduction reaction? The molecule that is reduced gains electrons The molecule that is oxidized loses electrons The molecule that is reduced loses electrons The molecule that is oxidized gains electrons Both A and B are correct What is the primary function of the light reactions of photosynthesis? To produce energy-rich glucose from carbon dioxide and water To produce ATP and NADPH To produce NADPH used in respiration To use ATP to make glucose A plant has a unique photosynthetic pigment. The leaves of this plant appear to be reddish yellow. What wavelengths of visible light are not being absorbed by this pigment? red and yellow Blue and violet Green and yellow Blue, green and red Green, blue and violet 1.E 2.B 3.A

Agenda Modeling the Light Reaction Homework: Photosynthesis Packet

Unit Three LTs I can describe why all living systems require a constant input of free energy and matter I can explain how photosynthesis provides living things with matter and free energy I can explain how cellular respiration provides living things with a useable source of free energy I can explain why living things must exchange matter with the environment, and describe how these exchanges take place* *: Winter break LT. . .

Pigments form aggregates on the thylakoid membrane called photosystems Pigments form aggregates on the thylakoid membrane called photosystems. The purpose of these photosystems is to collect energy over a "broad" range of wavelengths and concentrate it to one molecule called a reaction center which uses the energy to pass one of its electrons on to a series of enzymes. This aggregate of different proteins is called an antennae complex.

Life processes are not spontaneous Life processes are not spontaneous. Life needs a constant input of free energy in order to maintain those processes. Life harnesses energy released in spontaneous processes to make non-spontaneous processes happen

Modeling Step 1: Read Handout Step 2: Collect materials, divide labor Step 3: Assemble model Step 4: Use the model to demonstrate the events of the photosynthetic light reactions Resources: videos, pictures of the ETC, list of steps of light reactions, textbook (Chapter 10), notes from last class Step 5: Get assessed by Ms. Crock
