Ch. 8.1 Notes Photosynthesis

Where does photosynthesis take place? (partners) What is the goal? Where does photosynthesis take place? It takes place in the __________________ of a cell. What types of organisms do photosynthesis? What is chlorophyll? To make food (glucose) from sunlight chloroplast Plants (autotrophs) It is the green pigment found inside of a chloroplast

What is the overall reaction? Photosynthesis Big Picture (partners) Why is it so important? What is the overall reaction? __________+________+_____________+_________ Two steps of photosynthesis 1.) 2.) **Order doesn’t matter!! There is no first step.** It’s how plants make their food Sunlight H2O CO2 O2 C6H12O6 Light Dependent Reaction (light reaction) Light Independent Reaction (dark reaction)

Light Dependent Reaction (Also called the light reaction) What is needed? What is created? Overall Reaction: When does this step occur? Sunlight + water Oxygen + ATP Sunlight + H2O  O2 + ATP When the plant is in the sun (during the day)

Light Independent Reaction (Also called the dark reaction or Calvin Cycle) What is needed? What is created? Overall Reaction: When does this step occur? Carbon dioxide + ATP Glucose CO2 + ATP  C6H12O6 When there is NO sunlight (at night) What is the glucose needed for? It is the plant’s food! The glucose is also necessary for cellular respiration to begin.

Ch. 8.2 Notes Light

Pigment What is it? White Light How is white light created? The color of something (like paint colors!) It is a combination of all the colors of light

What color would a green leaf be if we looked at it under red light? Chlorophyll Why is it green? Light Experiment What color would a green leaf be if we looked at it under red light? Why does this happen? It reflects green light & absorbs all the rest Brown/black There is no green light to be reflected. So you see no light, which looks brown/black.
