Integers: Comparing and Ordering
Presentation transcript:

1-6 Comparing and Ordering Integers You’ll Learn: To compare and order integers and to find absolute values.

New Vocabulary Integers- Opposites- Absolute Value- The set of positive whole numbers, their opposites, and zero. Opposites- Two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line, but in opposite directions. Absolute Value- A number’s distance from 0 on a number line.

Finding an Opposite Find the opposite of 6. The opposite of 6 is -6 because both are twelve units from 0, but in opposite directions.

BIPE Practice! Find the opposite of…

Finding Absolute Value A number’s distance from 0 on a number line. The absolute value of -3 is written as I-3I = 3

Find the absolute value of… BIPE Practice! Find the absolute value of…

Comparing Integers You can compare and order integers by graphing on a number line. Tip: Of two integers on a number line, the one farther to the right is greater!

Compare the given numbers using <, >, or =. BIPE Practice! Compare the given numbers using <, >, or =. 2 and 8 7 and -1 -5 and -7 -22 and -102

Ordering Integers

Order the numbers from least to greatest! BIPE Practice! Order the numbers from least to greatest! 3, -1, -4, and 2 -4, 8, -2, and -8 2, -3, -7, 1, and 10

Exit Slip! Find the opposite of 2 Find the absolute value of I20I Compare 0 and -2 using <, = or >. Order the numbers -2, 0, 7, -1, -5 from least to greatest.
