The Counterclaim Paragraph SWBAT draft the counterclaim paragraph of their Argumentative essays by including one piece of text evidence from one of the two resources. The Counterclaim Paragraph What are the four steps for writing a counterclaim? 1) State counterclaim (start with transition). 2) Explain counterclaim and give an example. 3) Explain why counterclaim is wrong. 4) Provide a quote (with citation {author’s last name, pg. #} and explanation using different words) that supports why counterclaim is wrong. *Steps 2-4 are interchangeable, meaning these sentences can be in any order.

On the other hand, some believe that what a climber achieves on Everest is worth the possibility of getting sick. Jon Snow believes that climbers go to Everest knowing the risks because the reward overpowers everything else. Many climbers would agree with Snow, but this reasoning is not enough. Many adventurers, even after summiting, don’t make it back down the mountain without some version of mountain sickness, or even alive. “Just because you get to the top doesn’t mean you don’t have to come back down. And sometimes the climb down is just as harmful and treacherous” (White, pg. 12). Life is much more valuable than a single accomplishment, which is why climbing Everest is not an intelligent idea.

SWBAT draft the counterclaim paragraph of their Argumentative essays by including one piece of text evidence from one of the two resources. Turn & Talk: What makes the counterclaim paragraph different from the other two paragraphs in an Argumentative essay? Answer: In the counterclaim paragraph, the writer mentions the other side of the argument, which may seem like the essay is going in a different direction. However, after mentioning the other side, he/she squashes it in order to make his/her argument in the first two body paragraphs sound even stronger.

SWBAT draft the counterclaim paragraph of their Argumentative essays by including one piece of text evidence from one of the two resources. Today’s goals: 1) Choose 1 pieces of text evidence to support your reason why the counterclaim is wrong by referring back to your Y’s and N’s that you annotated in your articles. 2) Begin writing your counterclaim paragraph. I will walk around the room to assist. *Use the checklist on the graphic organizer!
