Toulmin and Classical Argumentation
The Toulmin model is a very simple and practical method for arguing your position on an issue.
Toulmin Model The Toulmin model is composed of 3 main steps. They are 1. Claim 2. Data 3. Warrant These three steps are absolutely necessary to creating an effective argument!
Claim The claim is what you are trying to prove. Your claim is also the main portion of your thesis statement.
Data The data portion can also be called EVIDENCE. This evidence is your 3 part list that will make up your topic paragraphs (if you choose to do a 3 part thesis). This is the “because” portion of your thesis statement.
Warrant The warrant portion are the examples YOU provide to reinforce what you are saying in each body paragraph.
