Introductions & Conclusions

Introduction The first paragraph in a paper that introduces your topic and provides the reader with a clear claim Contains 3 parts Topic Sentence/Hook Lead-In Claim

Visualize it Think of the Introduction Paragraph as an upside down triangle. Attention Getter Lead-in Claim

Topic sentence Be sure to avoid: The very first sentence(s) that gets the reader’s attention and makes them want to read more VERY general introduction of the topic Use the Passage Set Title to help you construct your topic sentence Be sure to avoid: Asking Questions No direct quotes Don’t talk directly to the reader

Lead-In The sentences between the attention-getter and claim/thesis statement Helps narrow the topic from general to specific Acts as a transition between attention-getter and claim/thesis statement Lead-in’s help keep you on topic

Claim The most important sentence in the paper Last sentence of introduction paragraph Tells exactly what the paper will be about Sometimes, it will present the order of the supporting material that will be in the paper Use the prompt for assistance with writing the claim

Let’s Try it Look back at the prompt we used to write the Body Paragraphs Let’s construct an Introduction based off the notes we just took.

Conclusion The last paragraph in an essay that neatly wraps up the paper Contains 3 main parts Restate the claim Lead-out Punch

Visualize it Think of the Conclusion Paragraph as a triangle. Restate Claim Lead-Out Punch

Restate Claim Summarize the thesis without repeating yourself The most specific part of the conclusion Should include a transition to indicate that this is your concluding paragraph In conclusion, In summary, In any event, All in all, In essence

Lead-Out Be sure to avoid: Adding new information Talking directly to the reader Repeating your claim again Just like the lead-in only backwards Makes the topic larger to become more general and less specific Smooths out the conclusion paragraph

Punch Last sentence of the last paragraph Give the paper finality Similar to an attention getter because it should make the reader think and leave an impression Most general part of the conclusion paragraph

Let’s Try it You now have an Intro & 2 Body Paragraphs Let’s construct a Conclusion Paragraph and make a finished product

Let’s Review TAP & CUB every prompt PEE on your paper Construct a cohesive essay Cite your sources; using the Source # (every source is labeled, be mindful of it) According to Source #, The author of Source # states, [Title of the article] states,
