Parts of the Cell

These parts are called organelles. Cells come in many shapes and sizes, but all cells have some parts in common. These parts are called organelles.

Plant vs. Animal Cells Plant cells are rectangular. They also have a few organelles that animal cells don’t have. Animal cells are round.

Plant vs. Animal Cells As we talk about the parts of the cells, label them on your pictures.

Controls what gets in and out of the cell Cell Membrane Controls what gets in and out of the cell

CELL MEMBRANE Cell Membrane Cell Membrane

Cell Wall Protects plant cells

Cell Wall Found in Plants Only

CELL WALL Cell Wall

Control Center Holds genetic material Nucleus Control Center Holds genetic material

NUCLEUS Nucleus Nucleus

Power Station - Produces Energy - Changes Food to Chemical Energy Mitochondrion Power Station - Produces Energy - Changes Food to Chemical Energy

Mitochondrion Mitochondrion Mitochondrion

Produces food Changes sunlight into food by photosynthesis Chloroplast Produces food Changes sunlight into food by photosynthesis

Chloroplast Found in Plants Only

CHLOROPLAST Chloroplast

Storage of food and water Vacuoles Storage of food and water

Huge in plant cells Small in animal cells

VACUOLE Vacuole Vacuole

Differences between Plant and Animal Cells PLANT CELLS Square or “boxy” Have a cell wall Have chloroplasts Large vacuoles ANIMAL CELLS Round No cell wall No chloroplasts Small vacuoles

Organelles Review WHICH ORGANELLE?

WHICH ORGANELLE?

Holds genetic material that gives instructions to the cell WHICH ORGANELLE? Holds genetic material that gives instructions to the cell

WHICH ORGANELLE? Stores water

Lets things in and out of the cell WHICH ORGANELLE? Lets things in and out of the cell

WHICH ORGANELLE? The place where photosynthesis happens in plant cells (where sunlight is changed to food)
