1. Objectives and Standards! What is our essential Question? TODAY’S AGENDA! 2. Describe the Polis 1. Objectives and Standards! What is our essential Question? 3.BREAK OUT ROOMS! THE POLIS! 4.Who was a Greek Citizen?!! 5.Whats next?!

What ideas from the Polis last to our civilization today?! OBJECTIVES STANDARDS Students will explore The role of the polis and how a collection of city-states is different than a united nation through cooperative learning. 8.4.7.A: Summarize the social, political, cultural, and economic contributions of individuals and groups in world history. ESSENTIAL QUESTION What ideas from the Polis last to our civilization today?!

WHAT IS A SUFFIX?! A suffix is a group of letters attached to the end of a root or word (or even group of words)  For example, a suffix can tell the part of speech of a word or modify/change and extend meaning.

THE POLIS Polis: a city-state of ancient Greece Some cities like Annapolis, Indianapolis, Metropolis borrow “polis”. It serves as a Suffix for this cities!

GROUP WORK!!! Today, we will start with group work. You will use your Textbook pages 260-265 for the group work. You will work on page 227 of your student pages. When you have your Student Pages and Textbook ready to go, give me a green check

Group 1 Textbook: 260-262 The ancient Greeks lived in _______________ such as Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Thebes. What is the Polis? Why did the Greeks prefer to live there?

Group 2 Textbook: 260-262 Describe the Greek view of the role of government in the Polis.

Group 3 Textbook Page 262 Summarize the role and duties of citizens in the polis.

Group 4 Textbook Page 264 Which groups of people in the Polis were allowed to be citizens?

LET’S SEE HOW YOU DID! 1 MINUTE BREAK COMING!

WHAT IF… Pennsylvania just passed a law that to be a citizen, you had to meet the following criteria. You have to be a male. You have to be born in Pennsylvania. Your parents had to have been born in Pa. You cannot be a slave. For that last one, we are all okay, but give me a green check if you would be a citizen, a red x if you would not

HOWEVER! Thanks Greeks!!! Despite the lack of rights for the majority of the population, the Greeks gave more rights to people than any other civilization we discussed, and many of our ideas about rights come from the Greeks. The Greeks believed that people should use their minds and past experiences to choose the kind of government that worked best.
