Bell Activity ENTER QUIETLY! GET BINDER! QUIETLY AND ALONE- begin Bell Activity for Thursday!

Page 11 Chemical Properties of Matter Chemical properties deal with how a substance reacts with other substances. Chemical Property: A characteristic of a substance to change into different substances

Examples of chemical properties: Combustion- rapid combination of fuel with oxygen, produces heat, light, or new substances Ex. Gas, oil, or coal burning in a furnace Electrolysis- Use of electricity to break a compound into elements or simpler compounds Ex. Breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen

3. Oxidation- combination of a substance with oxygen - Ex 3. Oxidation- combination of a substance with oxygen - Ex. Rusting of an iron fence 4. Tarnishing- slow combination of bright metal with sulfur on another substance, producing a dark coat on the metal

Page 12 Chemical and Physical Changes Physical Change- a change in matter that does not change the matter itself, reversible change, changes the appearance, not what its made of! i.e Ice melting to water (still water) Chemical Change- a change in matter that produces an entirely new substance with its own chemical and physical properties i.e Wood burning (no longer wood after it burns)

MOST IMPORTANT! Chemical and physical properties help us classify and understand matter Chemical and physical properties of a substance are independent of the amount of the sample! One gram of gold has the same properties as 1,000 grams of gold! Physical changes result in the same matter, just in a different form. Chemical changes produce a new substance with new properties.
