Unit 2 Notes: Cells

(1) Cell Theory The cell is the most basic unit of life. All living things are made of cells. New cells are produced from already existing cells.

(2) Living Characteristics All Living Things Must Be Able To: Have Genetic Info & Reproduce Metabolize Nutrients & Release Waste Grow & Develop Over Time Respond, Adapt & Evolve with their Environment Maintain Homeostasis (Internal Stability)

(3) Why aren’t viruses cells? They can’t do this on their own: Reproduce Metabolize Nutrients / Excrete Waste Grow / Develop Maintain Homeostasis They require a host to complete these processes.

(4) Multi- vs. Uni- Unicellular Organisms: Organisms made of only a single cell. Multicellular Organisms: Organisms made of trillions of specialized cells.

(5) Pro- vs. Eu- Prokaryotic Cells: Cells without a nucleus. Pro = before ; -Karyo = nucleus Cells that evolved before a nucleus Eukaryotic Cells: Cells with a nucleus and multiple organelles. Eu = true ; -Karyo = nucleus Cells with a true nucleus
