Ribbon of Life – Key Terms Atom – Smallest particle of matter (ex. Hydrogen atom) Molecule - a group of atoms bonded together (ex. H2O) Organelle – Specialized parts inside of a cell (ex. nucleus) Cell – Basic unit of structure & function in a living thing

Ribbon of Life – Key Terms Tissue – group of specialized cells in a living thing (ex. ) Organ – group of tissues working together for particular function (ex. heart, liver) Organ System –a group of organs that work together to perform one or more bodily functions (ex. respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system) Complex organism – made of widely diverse eukaryotic cell multiple organs systems (ex. elephant, human, tree)

What are the 3 major groupings of Living organisms from least to most complex? Prokaryotes (ex. Bacteria) Single Cell Eukaryotes (ex Paramecium) Multicellular Eukaryotes (ex. Human, grass)

Are all cells organisms? To be an organism, a living cell must live independently of other cells. Are skins cells an organism? Is a paramecium an organism?

What is the basic unit of life? Why? The cell is the basic unit of life. Why? Because all living things are made of one or more cells. Anything less than a cell is not alive!

What organelles are found in all cells? All cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and ribosomes

What is the difference between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells? Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus (and other organelles); prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus!

How many kinds of organisms have prokaryotic cells How many kinds of organisms have prokaryotic cells? How many have eukaryotic cells? Bacteria (Monera) are the only organisms with prokaryotic cells. All other organisms have eukaryotic cells (Protists, Fungi, Plants, Animals)

How are paramecia cells and sheep cells the same and how are they different? Both are made from eukaryotic cells. These cells have many of the same organelles (nucleus, mitochondria, cytoplasm, cell membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, and ribosomes). Paramecia cells are living organisms, sheep cells are not!

What is a tissue? A tissue is a mass of cells of the same kind working together to perform a function for a complex organism.

How do cells in animals such as mammals get their resources to survive? Every cell in a mammal is served by a blood vessel (capillary). These animal cells get food (energy), water, gas exchange, and eliminate waste they need by being in contact with the blood stream. The process is called respiration! - The process living organisms go through to use energy!

What does it mean when they say “all life is aquatic”? Life happens in cells. Cells are filled with a water-based cytoplasm. Even though millions of cells live on land, their “environment” is aquatic. For this reason some say all life is aquatic as cells are surrounded and filled with water!

What is the difference between RESPIRATION & PHOTOSYNTHESIS in cells? Respiration: the way a cell uses chemical energy to produce “E” to perform all the cell’s activities and remove waste products Oxygen + Sugars  “E”nergy + Carbon Dioxide + Water (waste products) This occurs in all types of cells in the mitochondria (plants, animals, protists, fungi)

What is the difference between RESPIRATION & PHOTOSYNTHESIS in cells? Photosynthesis: the process where PLANT cells use the Sun’s light energy to make their own food! Sunlight “E” + Carbon Dioxide + Water  Sugars + Oxygen (waste product) This occurs in the chloroplasts of PLANT cells only!
