Graphs Graphs are used to display data. They visually represent relationships between data. All graphs should have a title that identifies the variables.

Graphing Notes. Why Graph? Graphs are great because they communicate information visually Graphs help make complicated information easy to understand.
Graphing. Line Graphs  Shows a relationship where the dependent variable changes due to a change in the independent variable  Can have more than one.
Graphing Review. Variables Which variable do you change? – Independent variable – X axis Which variable do you measure? – Dependent variable – Y axis.
Graphing Notes. All graphs must have: Title: must be specific Labels on each axis: must include a UNIT put unit in parentheses ( m )

Using Excel to Create Graphs and Displays Mr. Ricks Madison High School

Keys to Good Graphs Include an appropriate title Label the axes Make sure axes are scaled appropriately Use a graph that is appropriate for the data Keep it simple

Categorical Variable Data Sets Pie Charts show categories as slices of a whole Bar Charts show the distribution of a categorical variable

Making a Pie Chart or Bar Chart in Excel is nice and easy! Type the categories into a column Type the counts in the column next to the categories Select both columns and insert the appropriate chart Make sure your chart title and axes labels are appropriate

Time Series Often data is gathered over intervals of time Ex: A record of the average pH of North Leigh Creek by year Time will be on the x-axis (independent) Input time data into a column Input measured value into column next to time data Select columns and insert chart Label axes and chart appropriately

Create a bar chart and pie chart to display this data 2016 South Leigh Creek PET Data # Plecopteras 57 # Ephemeropteras 223 # Trichopteras 44 # Others 28
