I.N. PAGE 23 & 25 Headings Vocabulary Important Words The Scientific Method I.N. PAGE 23 & 25 Headings Vocabulary Important Words

1. OBSERVE 2. STATE THE PROBLEM SEEING SOMETHING YOU CANNOT EXPLAIN. YOU WANT TO PROVE SOMETHING 2. STATE THE PROBLEM UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PROBLEM IS THEN YOU CAN GET EXPERIMENT STARTED

4. PERFORM THE EXPERIMENT UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS YOU ARE TRYING TO PROVE OR DISPROVE YOUR HYPOTHESIS 3. FORM A HYPOTHESIS YOU NEED TO MAKE A GUESS AS TO WHAT YOU THINK THE RESULT WILL BE… MUST BE ABLE TO TEST IT!!!

Dependent Variable VARIABLE Independent Variable THINGS YOU CHANGE! A FACTOR TESTED IN AN EXPERIMENT WHEN TRYING TO PROVE OR DISPROVE A HYPOTHESIS YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST ONE VARIABLE Dependent Variable Responding variable (depends on IV) what you see happening what you record data about Independent Variable The actual thing you CHANGE! Usually only 1 Variable you are testing

CONTROL THE STANDARD USED TO COMPARE WITH THE OUTCOME OF A TEST

5. COLLECT DATA RECORD RESULTS FROM EXP. ON A DATA TABLE THAT YOU CREATE YOURSELF UNLESS TEACHER TELLS YOU OTHERWISE USUSALLY ON 1ST LEFT PAGE OF LAB REPORT

GRAPHING ALWAYS PUT GRAPH ON LEFT PAGE OF LAB REPORT MUST HAVE FOR FULL CREDIT: 1. TITLE Should reflect what the graph is showing (distance vs. time) 2. NUMBERS FOR SCALE Always go at least 10 numbers higher than your largest number 3. LABEL AXIS “X” & “Y” W/: WHAT IS BEING MEASURED (time) & UNITS (seconds) 4. LARGE GRAPH --SHOULD TAKE UP ENTIRE SHEET OF PAPER --(no small graphs)

HAND MADE (no computer) MUST BE IN COLOR!!! REMEMBER IT GOES ON THE LEFT PAGE!!! EACH NUMBER ON AXIS MUST HAVE SAME # VALUE (i.e. 5, 10, 15 not 5, 7, 8, 20, 25) MUST BE STRAIGHT, NEAT, LEGIBLE DATA TABLE MUST BE ATTACHED IF TURNED IN What is missing on these graphs?

Is this graph ready to turn in for full credit?

6 A. CONCLUSION WRAP UP YOUR EXPERIMENT BASE IT ON YOUR FINDINGS (DATA) MUST BE 2-3 COMPLETE SENTENCES

6B. ACCEPT OR REJECT ORIGINAL HYPOTHESIS USING DATA & OBSERVATIONS MADE DECIDE IF YOUR ORIGINAL HYP. WAS RIGHT or WRONG EXPLAIN WHY IN A COMPLETE SENTENCES EX: I accept my original hypothesis which stated_____ because my data showed ______.
