Eating Disorders “Serious conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, your emotions and your ability to function in important areas of life”

10-15% of Americans Suffer from some type of eating disorder! 2006 vs. 2017 8 per 100,000 women suffer from 1 per 200 women suffer Anorexia Nervosa from Anorexia Nervosa 1% of women suffer from Bulimia 4.2% of women suffer from Bulimia 10-15% of Americans Suffer from some type of eating disorder!

Eating Disorders Have No Gender 1 in 10 people with an eating disorder are male Male athletes can sustain a lower body fat percentage without being unhealthy Usually develop eating disorders due to psychological problems Women develop disorders because they cannot sustain a low amount of body fat and remain healthy. Risk developing Amenorrhea Women more commonly develop disorders due to stress and negative emotions

Athletes at Risk Athletes are at a higher risk for developing eating disorders Specifically athletes involved in individual sports focused on weight or aesthetics Runners, Wrestlers, Gymnasts, Dancers, Figure Skaters Performance thinness: Trying to achieve the lowest amount of body fat to improve athleticism Appearance Thinness: Act of rewarding an athlete because of how thin they are Team sports focus less on the individual and often promote more of a varying range of body types (ex. American Football)
