Continental System 1806: Napoleon allied/conquered most major powers in Europe Plan: Destroy British trade Invade when economy weak Berlin Decree: Naval blockade of British: all connections cut British responds: blockade of France Napoleon responds: seize all neutral ports Ships must stop at France Threatened Russia with invasion

Problems with Russia -Leaves Continental System -France Invades Russian Strategy French Strategy Continuous retreating into heart of Russia Evacuates capital and burns it to ground Pursue Russians (Still September) Attack Moscow (capital of Russia) Retreat during Winter (vs staying in Moscow) Results: 1/6 French survive
