CORPORATION A company or group of people who act as a single business or entity and are recognized as such in law.
Corporation additional info. A corporation could also be a firm, agency, organization or a partnership.

Monopoly definition Exclusive control of a specific market in industry.
Monopoly Additional Info. When ONE company controls the business they are in. There is NO competition.
PROGRESSIVES a philosophy based on the Idea of Progress, which asserts that advancements in science, technology, and economic development.
Progressives Additional Info. People or politicians who want to improve the quality of life and make the world better.
UNION All workers in the same company are united together to gain more leverage in bargaining or strike situations.
Union Additional Info. Unions give workers a VOICE with the Company’s upper management.
TENEMENT A “run-down” multi-family house in a highly populated city.
Tenement Additional Info. Low income families would have lived here during the industrial revolution. Most homes did not have running water or plumbing (Toilets).

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION A period in the United States during the late 1800’s where we saw a massive increase in industry. This happened with steam power, the growth of factories, and the mass production of manufactured goods.

ROBBER BARON Refers to American Business men during the Industrial Revolution who used illegal and “dirty” tactics to get rich.
Robber Barons Additional Info. These men would create a Monopoly in their business and use bribes, threats, and other means to keep all competition away.

GILDED AGE The period between the Civil War and World War I during which the U.S. population and economy grew quickly, there was a lot of political corruption and and many wealthy people lived very fancy lives.
MUCKRACKING Refers to the people who wanted to expose the corruption of business leaders and politicians.
SHERMAN ANTI-TRUST ACT An Act that prohibits Monopolies or any kind of organization that attempts to prevent competition among companies.
