3rd January 2013 LO: - Examine the Poem A Cockroach!

WATCH THIS!!! Activity: Use the title: Description of Cockroaches Watch the videos about cockroaches and create 3 sentences describing the appearance, movement and personality of cockroaches. Extension task: Include some alliteration, onomatopoeia and assonance in your sentences.

Quick Annotation Each line has _____ syllables What is the narrative of the poem? Highlight where the personal pronoun “I” occurs. Rhyme Scheme? Highlight any instances of personification – where the cockroach’s actions are described using “human-like” adjectives and adverbs.

What is the effect of all of these things you’ve annotated?

Hint: You may choose to emphasise the “positives” of the human race. YOUR OWN VERSION Compose your own (shorter) version of this poem. Think of an animal that can be likened to the human species: 8 lines Rhyme Scheme = abab Each line with the same number of syllables Use the word “I” in lines 1 and 6. Describe the actions of the animal in lines 2 - 5. Use “human-like” adjectives and adverbs to describe the actions of the animal. Hint: You may choose to emphasise the “positives” of the human race.
