Conversions within the Metric System

The Metric System Types of Measurement Mass – the property of body that causes it to have weight in a gravitational field. Volume - the amount of 3 dimensional space occupied by an object. Length – the linear extent in space from one to end to the other. Temperature – the degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment.

Group these units as measures of mass, volume, length, or temperature. gram, millilitre, centimetre, litre, metre, Celsius, kilogram, kilometre, milligram, millimetre, dekagram Mass Length Volume Temperature gram kilogram milligram dekagram centimetre metre kilometre millimetre millilitre litre Celsius

grams, Liters, meters When finding or calculating mass use grams. When finding or calculating volume use litres. When finding or calculating length use metres .

Match the item with the appropriate units of measure. a.) Mass of a paper clip 1.) 1 mL b.) Width of finger nail 2.) 1 cm c.) Mass of a liter bottle of water. 3.) 1 g d.) Amount of liquid in an eyedropper 4.) 1 m e.) Length of a baseball bat 5.) 1 km f.) A ten minute walk 6.) 1 mm g.) Thickness of a dime 7.) 1 kg

Measure the length of each line to the nearest millimeter. ________________________________ answer: ________ ______________ answer: ________ _______________________________________ answer: ________ _________________________ answer: ________

Converting within the Metric System Refer to the chart on the hand out. When moving up the step – divide OR move the decimal to the left When moving down the step – multiply OR move the decimal to the right Convert the following: 560 mm to metres 0.56m 34 000 mL to litres 34 L 78 000 000 mg to kilograms 78kg 5km to centimetres 500 000 cm 50L to millilitres 50 000 mL 0. 000 05kg to milligrams 50 mg

Student Try 687 km to cm 68 700 000 cm 84 mm to m 0.084 m 145 m to mm 145 000 mm 897 000 mm to km 0.897 km 35 460 cm to dm 3546 dm 1870 km to mm 1 870 000 000 mm 3680cm to km 0.03680 km
