Sixth Grade FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Will we do a lot of writing? Yes. We will write: essays (argument, information) about what we read poems stories (personal narrative)

What happens if I am late to class? If you aren’t in your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy It gets marked in PowerSchool

Can I check out books from class? Yes. You can check out one book at a time. You must write down the title of the book you are borrowing in your class period binder.

Personal Choice Books (PCBs) You must always have a book of your choice with you to read. You will read your (PCB) for 10 minutes at the beginning of every class. You will earn 5 participation points every day. If you don’t have a PCB with you, you will lose 2 participation points. If you finish a book in class, you can look for a new book.

What books will we read? We will read a variety of short stories together and maybe a novel.

What is Homework Help Club? Homework Help Club is held on Fridays from 1-2 p.m. in room F2. You can work on late work and get organized. You must let Mrs. van Amson know BEFORE Friday if you are coming. If your English grade drops below 70% (D), you will be invited to attend. If you can’t make it on a Friday, talk to Mrs. van Amson

What if I get a bad grade? If your grade drops below 70% (C-), you will receive an invitation to attend the Homework Help Club in this room F-2 on Fridays from 1-2 p.m.

Is there extra credit? No.

Will we have homework everyday? We will have homework Monday-Thursday. You should also read 20 minutes every day!

What if I forget my homework? Turn it in the next day. Attach a token for full credit. Without a token, you will receive half credit (50%).

What if I am absent? You must find out what work you missed by: talking to Mrs. van Amson BEFORE or AFTER school checking Mrs. van Amson’s website asking a friend in class You have the same amount of days you were absent to turn in the work for full credit (For example, if you miss 2 days, you have 2 days to turn in your work when you return.)

What if I lose my Writing Notebook? You will need to buy another one. If you are worried about losing your notebook, keep it in class in your period crate. If you fill up your notebook, Mrs. van Amson will give you another one.

What will we do during Directed Studies? We will read.

What if I need to use the bathroom? You can use the bathroom by asking Mrs. van Amson and using a token. This counts for both English and Directed Studies. If it is an emergency, tell Mrs. van Amson You MUST sign in and out. You MUST take the bathroom pass with you.

Do you have supplies we can use? There is lined paper up front. There are pencils in the blue basket.

Can I eat and drink in class? No food in class. We have ants. You can drink from your water bottle at any time. You can use the water fountain at appropriate times.
