FQ: How can I use the evidence I’ve gathered to create a more comprehensive evidence and source list? Warm up: Please take out all of your materials. 1 book 2 news articles 2 JSTOR articles Textbook Research notebook HW: Update and expand your evidence and source list and bring it to our next class. Revised comprehensive evidence and source list DUE on Wednesday, 11/2, by 10 pm on turnitin.com.

Agenda Take a look at your evidence and source list: What are you missing? Where are the gaps in your research? Reading, note-taking, and evidence-gathering; updating evidence and source list as you go Evidence and source list self-check

My Current Evidence and Source List Describe the achievement gap in NYC public schools Background information about the achievement gap Definition of the achievement gap- maybe the NEA website? Evaluate this source. For more detailed background: “The Role and Significance of Race in the Racial Achievement Gap,” Pedro A. Noguera Achievement data based on school populations “School Composition and the Black-White Achievement Gap,” National Assessment of Educational Progress, US DOE, October 2015, pages 3-36 Anecdotal information about the existence of the achievement gap – need source Demonstrate how segregation influences the achievement gap in NYC public schools Statistics of segregation in NYC public schools – need source Case studies of the benefits of integrated schools “The Problem We All Live With.” This American Life podcast. July 31, 2015 Anecdotal evidence of the achievement gap worsening in segregated schools “Choosing a school for my daughter in a segregated City”, by Nikole Hannah-Jones, The New York Times Magazine, June 2016

Reading, note-taking, and evidence-gathering Read with the gaps in your evidence and source list in mind. Pause after each paragraph and in the margin, summarize: What in this section is relevant to my question? When you find evidence that fits the criteria of your evidence and source list, mark it and add the citation to your list.

Self-Check: Evidence and Source List Have I clearly articulated my research question? Have I divided my question into two accurate and logical parts: describing my concern and demonstrating the influence of a particular factor on my concern? For each part of my question, have I listed a minimum of 3 pieces of specific evidence I will need? In the phrasing of my evidence, have I identified the type of evidence I need, using research vocabulary like primary, secondary, tertiary, anecdotal, statistical, contextual, etc.? Have I noted for myself the evidence I have already located and the source it appears in? Have I developed a plan to address the gaps in my research? How will I locate the evidence I haven’t yet found?

Closing and HW Reminder Closing: Share with a partner. Where are your gaps? How will you address them? HW: Update and expand your evidence and source list and bring it to our next class. Revised comprehensive evidence and source list DUE on Wednesday, 11/2, by 10 pm on turnitin.com.
