So Sara took it back. So when she got to the store, she found an even more extravagant top, so she was excited.

What words should be capitalized? What 6 rules will help me to correctly use dialogue in my writing? Dialogue Rules! What 6 rules will help me to correctly use dialogue in my writing?

1. Indent every time a new person speaks. I sat down across from her and began to lay out my cards. “Stop that,” she said. “What?” I said.

2. Put quotation marks around the things people say aloud. “Stop copying me,” she said. “Mom, tell him to stop copying me. He’s driving me crazy."

3. Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation. “Leave your sister alone,” Mom said, “and come help me work on this jigsaw puzzle. I’m having trouble.”

4. Put end punctuation inside the quotation marks. “Leave your sister alone,” Mom said, “and come help me work on this jigsaw puzzle. I’m having trouble.”

5. If you break up dialogue with narration, be sure to use a comma before jumping back into your narration. “Leave your sister alone,” Mom said, “and come help me work on this jigsaw puzzle. I’m having trouble.”

6. OPTION: Italicize thoughts. Surely he doesn't think Vicky is in love with him! thought Anne.

7. He said, She Said: When your character is directly quoting someone else, you need quotes within quotes. “George said, ‘We could all go together,’ when I talked to him the other day,” Margaret sassed back.
