MAP4C Unit 2 Measurement in Design
You should be able to convert from Imperial measures to Metric measures. Many trade materials are still measured using the Imperial systems – like lumber for example. Some conversions may require the use of fractions to solve. Conversions
When adding or subtracting fractions, we must use a common denominator. So ½ and ¾ has a common denominator of 4, as 2 and 4 both go into 4. If we added ½ and ¾, we would add 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4 = 1 and ¼. Fractions
If we multiply fractions, you simply multiply the numerators and the denominators separately. 5/4(3/5) = 15/20 = ¾ If we divide fractions, we must invert and multiply the fractions. 5/4 ÷ 6/7 = 5/4 x 7/6 = 35/24 Fractions
Convert Convert 8 feet to inches. There are 12 inches in a foot, so there are 8feet(12 inches/foot) = 96 inches in 8 feet. Note feet are represented by an apostrophe and inches as a quote. 8’ = 96” Convert 5000 m into km There are 1000 m in a km, so 5000 m = 5000m/1000m/km = 5 km. Convert
