A group of college students were given a short course in speed-reading A group of college students were given a short course in speed-reading. The instructor was curious if a monetary incentive would influence performance on a reading test taken at the end of the course.  Half the students were offered $5 for obtaining a certain level of performance on the test, the other half were not offered money. What is the hypothesis? A. If you give people money, then reading performance will not be influenced. B. If you read, then you will get money. C. If you give people money, then performance on a reading test will be influenced. D. If you are in college, then you should read faster than kindergarteners.

The instructor was curious if a monetary incentive would influence performance on a reading test taken at the end of the course.  Half the students were offered $5 for obtaining a certain level of performance on the test, the other half were not offered money. What is the independent variable? A. Grade level of students B. Money incentive - $5 or no money C. How quickly students read the test D. Amount of sunlight available for reading

What is the problem to be solved? A social psychologist thinks that people are more likely to conform to a large crowd than to a single person.  To test this idea, the social psychologist had either one person or five persons stand on a busy walking path on campus and look up.  The psychologist stood nearby and counted the number of people passing by who also looked up. The psychologist found that 75% of the people being observed looked up if five people were looking up. Only 32% of the people being observed looked up if only one person was looking up. What is the problem to be solved? A. Will a person look up if they hear an airplane? B. Will a person look up if asked to look up? C. Will 5 people help someone on a walking path? D. Will a person do what a crowd is doing more than what a single person is doing?

What is the best hypothesis? A social psychologist thinks that people are more likely to conform to a large crowd than to a single person.  To test this idea, the social psychologist had either one person or five persons stand on a busy walking path on campus and look up.  The psychologist stood nearby and counted the number of people passing by who also looked up. The psychologist found that 75% of the people being observed looked up if five people were looking up. Only 32% of the people being observed looked up if only one person was looking up. What is the best hypothesis? A. If there is a large group, then people will conform to the large group B. If there is conformity, then it is wrong – YOLO! C. If one person does something, then other people will do it D. If people are on a walking path, then they will do the same activities

What is the independent variable? A social psychologist thinks that people are more likely to conform to a large crowd than to a single person.  To test this idea, the social psychologist had either one person or five persons stand on a busy walking path on campus and look up.  The psychologist stood nearby and counted the number of people passing by who also looked up. The psychologist found that 75% of the people being observed looked up if five people were looking up. Only 32% of the people being observed looked up if only one person was looking up. What is the independent variable? A. Length of walking path B. Social psychologist C. Temperature during the day D. Size of the group of people

What is the constant? A. Sunshine B. Trees C. Walking Path D. Grizzly Bears

Based on the data, should the social psychologist accept or reject the hypothesis? Accept Why??

What is the dependent variable? A social psychologist thinks that people are more likely to conform to a large crowd than to a single person.  To test this idea, the social psychologist had either one person or five persons stand on a busy walking path on campus and look up.  The psychologist stood nearby and counted the number of people passing by who also looked up. The psychologist found that 75% of the people being observed looked up if five people were looking up. Only 32% of the people being observed looked up if only one person was looking up. What is the dependent variable? A. Number of people who look up B. Campus of the school C. Rain amount D. Temperature of the day

What is the dependent variable? Jasper usually blows his nose using Kleenex tissues. His snot keeps leaking through the tissue. He decided he is going to create an experiment to find out if there is something better. He buys Puffs Plus to compare. He blows his nose into both tissues with the same amount of snot. He finds Kleenex holds more snot, but Puffs Plus was softer. What is the dependent variable? A. Jasper B. Softer tissue C. Tissue that holds the most snot D. color of snot

What is the independent variable? Jasper usually blows his nose using Kleenex tissues. His snot keeps leaking through the tissue. He decided he is going to create an experiment to find out if there is something better. He buys Puffs Plus to compare. He blows his nose into both tissues with the same amount of snot. He finds Kleenex holds more snot, but Puffs Plus was softer. What is the independent variable? A. Jasper B. Type of tissue C. Cost of tissue D. Amount of snot

What is the best hypothesis for Jasper’s problem? Jasper usually blows his nose using Kleenex tissues. His snot keeps leaking through the tissue. He decided he is going to create an experiment to find out if there is something better. He buys Puffs Plus to compare. He blows his nose into both tissues with the same amount of snot. He finds Kleenex holds more snot, but Puffs Plus was softer. What is the best hypothesis for Jasper’s problem? A. If I blow snot into Puffs Plus, then it will hold more snot B. If Kleenex makes a thin tissue, then people should get money back C. If I have a cold, then I should buy tissues and orange juice D. If you have snot, then you have a cold.
