Cognitive Therapies Teaches people new, more adaptive ways of thinking and acting Based on the assumption that thoughts intervene between events and our emotional reactions

Activity Scale developed to assess respondents’ attitudes toward seeking psychological help Scoring: Reverse the # you put for items 2, 4, 8, 9, and 10 Total scores range from 0 to 30 Higher scores mean a more favorable attitude toward seeking professional psychological help Handout 17-2

Discussion Why is it more difficult for some people to seek help for psychological problems than for medical problems? More women than men seek psychological help, why is that? People who identify strongly with cultural groups rather than the larger American culture are less likely to seek psychological help. Why? People with business degrees are less likely to seek help than people with social science majors. Why?

Group therapy In groups, therapists may be less involved with each individual member, but the session can help more people (6-9 in a 90 minute session as opposed to just 1), & costs less per person Clients can benefit from knowing that others have similar problems, get feedback & reassurance Family therapy helps family members discover the role they play in the interactive system that is a family & learn to communicate more openly and directly

The Mind Episode 33: Medication & Talk Therapy

Psychoanalysis Good candidates for psychoanalysis have 4 personal qualities: Motivation Capacity to form interpersonal relationships Capacity for introspection & insight Ego strength p.6
