The Parts of a Sentence English 1-2

The Sentence A sentence is a word or group of words that contains a subject and a verb and that expresses a complete thought. Ex: The clerk was waiting by the door.

A Sentence Fragment A word or group of words that is capitalized and punctuated as a sentence but that does not contain both a subject and a verb or does not express a complete thought. Ex: Was waiting by the door. (no subject)

Subject and Predicate The subject tells who or what the sentence is about. The predicate completes the sentence. Ex: Coyotes were howling in the distance. (s) (p)

Compound Subjects Consist of two or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb. Ex: Maria and Shelly baked the bread.

Compound Verbs Consists of two or more verbs that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same subject. Ex: My sister will buy or lease a new car.

Complements A word or group of words that completes the meaning of a verb. A complement may be a noun, pronoun, or an adjective. Ex: Marcella might become a dentist. (v) (c) Aunt Edna looks happy and relaxed today. (v) (c) (c)

Subject Complements A word or group of words in the predicate that describes or identifies the subject. Ex: The surface felt sticky. (Sticky describes surface.)

Objects Complements that do not refer to the subject. Objects follow transitive verbs—verbs that express an action directed toward a person, place, or thing.

Direct Object A direct object is the receiver of action within a sentence, as in "He hit the ball."

Indirect Object The indirect object identifies to or for whom or what the action of the verb is performed. The direct object and indirect object are different people or places or things. Ex: The instructor gave his students A's. (IO) (DO) Jo-Bob sold me her boat.
