Subject – Verb Agreement

What is the Subject of a sentence? The ‘subject’ is what or who the sentence is about. Bob bought two ice creams from the shop. The young boy was looking forward to his first day at his new school. Here the subject is ‘The young boy’ not just ‘boy’ because the subject has to include the whole noun phrase (the noun and anything that modifies it.

What does subject – verb agreement mean? Depending on whether your subject is a single person/object or multiple persons/objects will depend whether or not you need a single or plural verb. For example: The boy is playing football. Changes to… The boys are playing football because there is now more than one boy. OR: I was at the park. Changes to… We were at the park.

Change the verbs in the sentence so that the sentences make sense. The football players runs out of the locker room and onto the pitch. News of the big game were spread across the sports pages of every newspaper. One of the screaming fans were suddenly seen throwing a roll of toilet paper onto the pitch. The home team have one of the best records in the school’s history. Margaret and her brothers and sisters was glad to be at the football game. Standing near the very centre of the pitch was two overweight officials. Somebody in the back row were wise enough to sit next to a woman with an umbrella. Each of the band members were covered by a thick blanket when the rain began to fall.
